You write two essays in three hours, one from each of two sections, and each is worth 125 marks. Yet many aspirants prepare for it last and write it the same way they write school essays. (Always confirm the pattern and word limits in the latest notification; State PSC essay papers differ from UPSC.)

This guide gives you a practical plan for the paper: how to split your three hours, how to choose and decode a topic, how to structure an essay that flows, and how to practise so that your writing improves week after week.

What the Essay paper actually tests

The Essay is not a test of how much you know. It tests how you think and how clearly you can put that thinking on paper. Examiners read hundreds of scripts, so they reward essays that have a clear direction, balanced dimensions, relevant examples and a readable flow.

In short, a high-scoring essay is built on four things:

Depth of thought – you go beyond the obvious and show cause, consequence and nuance.

Structure – the reader always knows where you are in the argument.

Flow – each paragraph connects to the one before it.

Language – simple, precise sentences with no padding.

A 3-hour time plan

The most common reason for a weak essay paper is poor time management, not poor content. A second essay written in a hurry loses marks that a better plan would have saved. Use a fixed split and practise it until it feels natural.

Stage

Time per essay

What you do

Choose and decode the topic

5 min

Read all topics, pick one, underline keywords and the demand

Plan

10 min

Map 4–5 dimensions, examples, introduction and conclusion

Write

60 min

Write in paragraphs, keeping to the plan

Review

5 min

Fix flow, repeated points and unclear sentences

Total for two essays

160 min

20 minutes remain as buffer

Notice that planning gets 10 minutes. Aspirants who start writing at once usually repeat themselves by the third page.

How to choose the right topic

Do not choose a topic because you remember a good quotation about it. Choose the topic on which you can build four or five different dimensions and support them with examples. Ask yourself three quick questions:

Can I think of at least four dimensions (social, economic, political, ethical, environmental, global)?

Do I have two or three real examples, policies, cases or events to use?

Can I take a clear position, or at least a balanced view, without going off the topic?

If the answer is yes to all three, that is your topic. Philosophical topics suit aspirants who can think in abstract ideas and then ground them in examples. Contemporary and governance topics suit those with strong current knowledge. Pick according to your strength, not according to the topic that looks easier.

Decode the topic before you write

Take an illustrative topic such as “Technology is a good servant but a bad master.” A weak essay lists the benefits and harms of technology. A strong essay decodes the sentence first:

Keywords: servant, master – the essay is about control, not about technology alone.

Scope: individual, society, state and global levels.

Direction: when does technology serve, when does it start to dominate, and what restores balance?

This ten-line decoding becomes the skeleton of your essay. It also stops you from drifting away from the topic, which is the most expensive mistake in this paper.

Structure that creates flow

Introduction

Use two or three short paragraphs. Start with a hook (a short real incident, a striking idea or a simple definition), give the context, and end with a clear thesis that tells the reader what your essay will argue. Avoid long quotations and general statements that could open any essay.

Body

Give each dimension its own paragraph or pair of paragraphs. A reliable pattern for each is claim → explanation → example → link to the next idea. The last step is what creates flow. Add one paragraph that presents the counter-view or a limitation, because balanced essays read as more mature.

Conclusion

Do not summarise everything again. Return to your thesis, state what the argument means for society or governance, and end with a forward-looking line. Two short paragraphs are enough.

Understanding is the beginning. Practice creates performance.

WisdomIAS teaching philosophy

Language and expression

You do not need ornate vocabulary. You need clarity. Prefer short sentences, one idea per sentence, and active voice. Replace vague words such as “many”, “various” and “things” with specific nouns and examples. If you write in Hindi, keep the same discipline: simple sentence construction, consistent terminology and clean paragraphing.

Common mistakes to avoid

Starting to write without a plan, then repeating points.

Writing an information dump instead of an argument.

Using only one dimension (usually political or economic).

Quoting heavily but giving no examples.

Ending with a vague, generic conclusion.

Never writing a full essay in exam conditions before the actual exam.

A weekly practice routine

Reading about essays will not improve your writing. Writing and reviewing will. A simple weekly rhythm works well for most aspirants:

Two outline sessions (20 minutes each): pick a topic, decode it and write only the plan.

One full essay in 80 minutes: write under timed conditions.

One review session: check structure, dimensions, examples and flow, ideally with expert feedback.

Ongoing: keep a notebook of examples, case studies and short quotations sorted by theme.

Feedback is the multiplier. A trained evaluator can show you patterns you cannot see yourself, such as repeated points, weak transitions or missing dimensions. That is exactly why the WisdomIAS Essay Masterclass combines teaching on thinking, structure and language with personalised essay evaluation.

Explore the Essay Masterclass

The Essay paper carries 250 marks and rewards structure as much as ideas.
